Ministry Purpose & Description
Established in 1999, the mission of the Prayer Shawl Ministry (PSM) is to create hand-knitted and crocheted shawls/lap throws which are filled with the power of prayer for those in need. The blessing of the Prayer Shawl provides healing and comfort to the recipients. All parishioners are invited to request a shawl by submitting the name of a loved one who has experienced an illness, or to request a shawl for a joyful celebration. This is a beautiful gesture in demonstrating your love. The shawl or lap throw is either crocheted or knitted by one of the dedicated and talented members of PSM. As they are crocheting or knitting an item, prayers are being said. Once the item is completed it, it is then blessed by the priest.
Since the inception of the Prayer Shawl Ministry in 1999, the members of this organization have lovingly donated their time and talents by creating hand-knitted and crocheted shawls/lap throws which are filled with the power of prayer for those in need. The blessing of the Prayer Shawl provides healing and comfort to the recipients.
The first Prayer Shawl Ministry was held at St. Lucy Parish on Wednesday, July 10, 2013. At one time there were a total of nineteen crocheters and knitters. At the moment, there are nine volunteers and of those nine, four of the ladies have been volunteering since our first meeting. We recently lost a member who was 102 years young. And others have left because of their schedules. PSM is always looking for more knitters/crocheters.
The PSM has provided over 237 PSM Blessed shawls/lap throws for those who are sick and in need of comfort. Of those 237 PSM Blessed shawls/lap throws 89 were Blessed and given out during a funeral service.
One PSM Blessed shawl/lap throw was mailed far as South Africa; another one delivered to England; another was given to a young girl whose surgery went wrong; a couple have been sent to Southern California; five have been given to employees of the Diocese of San Jose and others have been requested by SL parishioners for a family member and/or friends who are sick and need of comfort and prayers.
Lastly, the members of Prayer Shawl Ministry would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the generosity of the donations received. God Bless.
